LPI: Tell me about what you’ve been doing to take your game to the next level. Also, do you play any other sports in the offseason or do you play 7on7?
DF: I workout before and after school 5 days a week and sometimes on weekends and try to run as much as possible. I’ve played basically every sport but this year I will most likely just be playing football so I can have time to lift.
LPI: What are your greatest strengths on the field and do you consider yourself a leader?
DF: I have a high IQ for the game and I try to take at least one thing away from each game to make myself better. I would definitely consider myself a leader on and off the field by helping out the underclassmen and my teammates and making them better players.
LPI: What schools have shown serious interest in you or may be close to offering?
DF: I have had some contact with NIU and a couple D2 and D3 schools but I don’t think any are close to offering.
LPI: Do you have any planned visits set? If so, where at?
DF: I want to visit as many as possible but a few on my list are NIU, Western Michigan, and Illinois St.
LPI: Who are some of your teammates or training partners that you believe can play at the next level, but have gone overlooked by college coaches?
DF:
Zack Stopczynski – 2019 LB High game IQ, super tough and hits harder than most. Definitely deserves a chance at the next level.
Ed Flores – 2019 RB LB. Super fast, very agile and elusive, great tackler and passionate for the game. Also definitely deserves a chance at the next level.
Cade Darling – 2019 S/CB, RB. One of the fastest I’ve ever seen, super athletic and has great vision while running the ball. Should definitely play some where at the next level.
Coach’s Corner
Woodstock North Head Coach Jeff Schroeder on Freeman on and off the field
“Derek has strong potential to play at the next level. He’s a good kid & a very coachable kid. Like most juniors varsity football was a bit of a learning experience for him & he has embraced that & really developed himself into an excellent d lineman.
Derek is never a discipline problem in school or on the field. He is also embracing the role of leadership this offseason. He doesn’t miss workout & really sells out in the weight room.”
